Sharapova helps national team become Fed Cup semi finalist


On February 8 the second ranked in the world defeated Agnieszka Radwanska and thus, made her team defeat the Polish team.

In the third match of the Fed Cup quarters Maria Sharapova beat the Pole Agnieszka Radwanska 6:1, 7:5.

Earlier the Russian tennis players won the two matches. Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Agnieszka Radwanska (6:4, 2:6, 6:2), and then Sharapova beat Agnieszka’s sister Urszula Radwanska (6:0, 6:3). Thus, the final score became 3:0 for Russia.

“It was the first time I managed to give a winning point to the team in such an important moment. I’m extremely happy with the result. This week we trained great with Anastasia Myskina (the tennis team head coach) and other players. And I’m happy that my family came to Poland to support me. It was so long ago when my mum watched me play live,” says Sharapova.

The doubles match was also won by the Russian team. Vitalia Diatchenko and Anastasia Pavlyuchankova defeated Klaudia Jans-Ignacik and Alicja Rosolska (6:4, 6:4).

The next Russian opponents are players from Germany. The matches will be on April 18-19.

As for Maria Sharapova, it’s her 4th appearance in Fed Cup matches. The last time when she played in the national team was in 2012 in Moscow (against Spain).

According to the rules a tennis player should play a certain number of matches in the national team to be able to play in the Olympics. The next Olympic Games will take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and Sharapova who was a flag-bearer in the Olympics in 2012 and got a silver medal in London had expressed her desire to play in Brazil.
