Russian Football Union to organize tournament among hero cities dedicated to 70th Victory anniversary

“It is possible that amateurs will be able to play in the tournament,” President of the Russian Football Veterans Union Alexander Mirzoyan told TASS.

The Russian Football Union (FUR) plans to organize a special veteran tournament dedicated to 70th anniversary of the Great Patriotic War Victory; each city-hero would form its football team to take part in the event. This information was given by President of the Russian Football Veterans Union Alexander Mirzoyan.

“We plan to organize a tournament among hero cities, in which veterans would participate. And they are not necessarily to have played at a professional level; amateurs will be able to play in the tournament too. But in order to organize the tournament, we need proper funding. We need sponsors, because the FUR has no money to organize this event. We assume that the tournament will be held in Moscow, for example, in the sports complex “Luzhniki”. If we fail to arrange the tournament on the May holidays, it will be possible to hold it later,” said Mirzoyan.

“If we do not find money to make the teams of all the hero cities attend the tournament, we can hold separate matches, for example Moscow vs St. Petersburg, Tula vs Volgograd,” he added.

Hero City is the highest degree, 12 USSR cities were awarded with this status. Nine of them are located in Russia: St. Petersburg, Moscow, Sevastopol, Volgograd, Kerch, Novorossiysk, Tula, Murmansk, Smolensk. According to Mirzoyan, only Russian cities should take part in the tournament.
