Belarusian cyclist Vasil Kiryienka from Team Sky powered his way to victory in the road cycling world championship time trail on Wednesday.

Vasil Kiryienka, bronze medalist of 2012 and fourth-place finisher the last two years, surprised the leaders by covering the 53km (32.9 miles) course in 1 hour 2 minutes 29.45 seconds.

Italian Adriano Malori came home 9.08 seconds adrift to take silver, with Frenchman Jerome Coppel clinching the bronze.

“I want to thank Team Sky – they have done an amazing job for me and I couldn’t have done this without their support. I dedicate this win to them,” Kiryienka admitted. “Today it was a matter of finding my balance and setting a tempo, and I am happy I could get this win.”
