Belarusian football players win first official match since 2012

Alexander Khatskevich’s debut match as the Belarusian national team head coach resulted in an away win over Macedonia (2:1).

That victory was the first for Belarusians in the 2016 UEFA European Championship qualifying matches. Before that Belarusians finished without much success four meetings: Luxembourg (1:1, away), Ukraine (0:2 home), Slovakia (1:3 home), Spain (0:3 away).

The match in Macedonia started not very successfully for the Belarusian team. Already in the 9th minute Trajkovski scored an opening goal after striking into the far corner of Zhevnov’s goal net. For a long time Belarusians couldn’t level the match, but from the middle of the first half Alexander Khatskevich’s players had been gradually taking the initiative. It led to Timofey Kalachyov’s goal in the last minute of the first half.

The second half was an equal fight, but the Belarusian team had more chances to lead the game. They realized one of the scoring chances in the 82nd minute, when Sergey Kornilenko was first to seize on the rebound.

It was the first official away win for Belarusians since 2010, when the team sensationally defeated France (1:0 away). The last time the national team had an official win was on 16 October 2012, when the Belarusians beat Georgia 2:0 at FC Dinamo stadium.

In other matches of Group C Spain beat Ukraine 1:0, Slovakia defeated Luxembourg 3:0.
