Khakassia fires leave 15 victims

More than 600 residents of the Republic of Khakassia sought medical treatment; the majority of them suffered burns or smoke inhalation.

According to the preliminary data, at least 15 people died in wildfires in Khakassia, said press officer of the Ministry of Health Anna Borodina.

“613 people have sought medical aid, 533 of which have already received medical care and have been sent home; 8 people are in a serious condition. The majority of people have suffered burns or smoke inhalation,” stated Borodina.

Earlier, the Ministry of Emergency Situations informed about 6 dead, and the Ministry of Health of Khakassia - about 10 dead.

Chief State Inspector of Fire Supervision Boris Borzov told reporters that more than 1,200 houses in 38 localities burned in Khakassia. According to him, the situation is under control now, but the Ministry of Emergency Situations stays alert to new fire hotspots.

Fires occurred in Khakassia on Sunday, April 12. According to the preliminary data, the cause of fires was burning last year’s dry grass.

Head of Khakassia Viktor Zimin at a meeting with Chief State Inspector of Fire Supervision Boris Borzov said the situation was abnormal: almost the entire republic was covered by fires just in an hour.
