Money stolen from mobile devices more often in Russia


Malware developed to steal money from mobile devices, including via mobile banking, can now capture verification codes and SMS on money write-off

The Bank of Russia reports increasing cases of unauthorized money write-off via mobile devices.

It is referred to paying via mobile internet using card details, paying for communication services, including money transfers to "short numbers". In addition, swindlers gain access to the victim's money via online banking applications ("Mobile Banking" service).

Smartphones and tablets get malware more often. This can happen, for example, via spam e-mails with links to external resources. The virus gets installed on the phone and the user follows such links.

Malicious software can have different possibilities, for example, they can state and send instructions to transfer money on behalf of the user, including in the form of SMS to "short numbers".

They can also transfer money to pay for goods and services using mobile banking and other applications, as well as capture one-time confirmation codes that the phone receives to confirm the operation.

According to the Bank of Russia, the major risk is related to the fact that in some cases the malware hides money write-off notifications from the client. Thus, the user can`t inform the bank on time that the money was transferred without his consent.

It is also becoming more frequent when swindlers force the client by fraud to report the data necessary to carry out the operation, including passwords, authentication codes, etc., warns the Bank of Russia.

The Bank of Russia advises people transferring money via mobile phones to take a number of preventive measures. In particular, it is recommended to install anti-virus on mobile devices with regularly updated databases, not to follow unreliable links, to timely inform banks about changing the number for using the "mobile banking" service.

Moreover, it is not recommended to download mobile phone applications from unreliable sources and give the phone and the bank card to other people, including relatives.

It is recommended not to tell anyone, including bank employees, your payment card PIN-code and check code on the reverse side of the payment card (SVV / CVC-code), "client-bank" passwords, one-time confirmation codes. If you think that strangers got access to your data, report it to the bank using the contact details provided on the official site.

The Central Bank also recommends all the banks to inform their customers about possible risks related to payments via mobile devices.
