The conflict has emerged because of the letter written by some Theater staff to appoint the "United Russia" member Yevgeny Gerasimov as an artistic director

The troupe of the Moscow Taganka Theater are split by the conflict related to the appointment of a new artistic director, a source close to the Theater management said to "Interfax".

"Several troupe members filed a letter to the higher authorities asking to appoint Yevgeny Gerasimov as artistic director, but it was five or six people, and they signed the letter on behalf of the whole troupe," a source said to the agency.

According to him, the other troupe members are outraged. "They knew nothing about the letter, they don`t want Gerasimov to be the artistic director and they are going to send a letter to the Department asking not to appoint Gerasimov and will offer several young candidates," explained the source.

Some time ago, Irina Apeksimova, actress and former director of the Roman Viktyuk Theater, was appointed a new director replacing Vladimir Fleischer who occupied the position before.

At the same time, some media reported that upon the request of the troupe, the actor, director, chairman of the Moscow City Duma Committee for Culture, member of the "United Russia" Moscow Council Yevgeny Gerasimov will in the near future become a new artistic director.

"I have never staged performances"

Gerasimov confirmed that the actors had agreed the letter with him.

"The situation at the Taganka Theater is complicated, the Theater staff are aware that they need a leader.

They chose me as a leader. I considered the matter and, respecting Yuri Lyubimov (the late founder of the Taganka Theater) and feeling love for the Theater, arrived at the idea that I was ready to become a crisis manager," explains Gerasimov to "Interfax."

However, he said that he didn`t know yet whether Moscow City Department of Culture agreed with the choice or not, as the Taganka Theater is subordinate to the Department. "I do not know yet whether the Department leadership agrees or not. But I do have a vision and some ideas how to make the Theater flourish and continue the traditions of a repertory theater," said Gerasimov.

However, he admitted that he had no experience of staging performances. "I have never staged performances. But in this situation, I don`t carry the torch for myself, I just hope to create a theater space, and a good atmosphere, and involve the best directors," Gerasimov shared his plans.

Head of the Department Sergey Kapkov found it difficult to answer the question whether Gerasimov would be appointed for this position. "I do not know," he answered the question asked by "Interfax".

Until 2011, Yury Lyubimov was the artistic director of the Taganka Theater and combined his position with the responsibilities of the director. After the conflict with the troupe he left the Theater and Valery Zolotukhin filled his position. After his death on March 30, 2013 Vladimir Fleischer was appointed director. His contract was terminated on March 5, 2015. The position of the artistic director remains vacant.
