The metropolia said that it doesn`t impose church censorship or restrict the freedom of artistic expression

Novosibirsk Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church stated that it hasn`t filed any applications to law enforcement agencies or courts concerning the "Tannhauser" opera staged at the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. This is said in the official statement published on the website of the Novosibirsk metropolia.

"Novosibirsk Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church points that the Diocese hasn`t filed any applications to law enforcement agencies to initiate administrative or criminal cases, especially any petitions to the court," says the statement.

Novosibirsk Diocese emphasizes that it doesn`t impose church censorship or restrict the freedom of artistic expression, "as some of the media and individuals try to present", and the whole legal situation with "Tannhauser" is outside the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church. The statement also says that the priests receive death threats for standing in prayer organized by them in the center of Novosibirsk on March 29. The church calls not to use the situation to provoke conflicts and expresses its willingness to have a dialogue with the creative community.
