Nikita Mikhalkov to open his Cinema Academy in Moscow

The Academy starts operating within the walls of the Moscow Film Actors Theater

Head of the Russian Cinematographers' Union Nikita Mikhalkov opens his Academy of Cinema and Theater in Moscow where he will be the president and the artistic director of the actor class. The Academy starts work in the building of the Moscow Film Actors Theater.

Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky is expected to take part in the opening ceremony. The meeting with the students will be attended by head of the director class Vladimir Khotinenko, head of the producer class Leonid Vereshchagin and head of the cameraman class Anatoly Mukasey.

The idea of a one-year academy emerged from the Summer Academy of Nikita Mikhalkov, which operated for three years.

According to the idea of the director, the students will attend workshops, watch movies, stage performances, and go on tours. The Academy will teach the basic principles of the most famous drama schools of the world – those of Yevgeny Vakhtangov, Michael Chekhov, Peter Brook, Charles Dullin, Konstantin Stanislavsky and others.

Mikhalkov told TASS earlier that the actor class should have been headed by Svetlana Druzhinina. "But it turned out that she started shooting and wouldn’t be with the students all the time, and it is very important to give at least the first impulse, to strictly monitor the first steps, to create the proper atmosphere," Mikhalkov said. Igor Yatsko will manage the daily work of the class.

"I'll come two or three times a week to explain the rules of the game," Mikhalkov said.
