Denis Matsuev to play three piano concertos by Tchaikovsky

The concert will be held on May 6 in Yekaterinburg; on May 7 in Moscow and in Klin.

Pianist Denis Matsuev will play the three piano concertos by Pyotr Tchaikovsky in Ekaterinburg for the first time, Director of the Sverdlovsk Philharmonic Alexander Kolotursky told TASS on Monday.

“The concert will be held in Yekaterinburg on May 6, 2015. On 7 May, on the 175th anniversary of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Matsuyev will play the same program in Moscow and Klin,” he said.

According to him, until now none of Russian pianists played the three concertos by Tchaikovsky in a row. “For any pianist it is very hard to do, so none tried. But Denis Matsuev decided to meet the challenge and he will play the program, which we called “Torzhestvo” (“Triumph”),” added Kolotursky.

The Tchaikovsky Music Festival is traditionally held in the Urals in three stages. In May, everyone celebrates the composer’s birthday. In the summer, in St. Peter’s Day (July 12) the Philharmonic organizes open-air concerts in the wooden architecture museum-reserve in the village of Nizhnyaya Sinyachikha and in the town of Alapayevsk of the Sverdlovsk region, where Tchaikovsky spent part of his childhood and where his museum is situated. In November, the composer’s Memorial Day is held.
